Headaches affect almost everyone at some point in their lives. Recurring headaches and migraines are typically more serious than an occasional headache and should be treated with chiropractic care. Although headaches can be caused by a variety of sources such as tightness in the neck muscles, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), stress and fatigue, high blood pressure and certain drug reactions there are two types of reoccurring headaches that most people suffer from. These are tension headaches and migraine headaches.
Tension headaches typically affect about 75% of all headache sufferers. Most individuals will describe a tension headache as a constant, dull aching pain on one or both sides of the head or a dull ache around the head or behind the eyes. Tension headaches usually begin slowly and can last for only minutes or sometimes for days. In some cases, chronic tension headaches will linger for many months. For most people they start in the middle or towards the end of the day. Some causes of tension headaches can be stress or bad posture. The most common cause of a tension headache is subluxations in the upper back and neck.
About 25 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraine headaches each year. A migraine is an intense throbbing headache that is often associated with nausea and sensitivity to noise or light. Your migraine headache can last for a few hours or a few days. If you suffer from migraines, it is common to experience visual symptoms called an "aura" before the migraine headache sets in. An aura is described as flashing lights or everything having a dream-like appearance. Migraine headaches are caused by constricting blood vessels in the brain that are followed by a dilation of blood vessels. You can decrease the chance of triggering a migraine by making some lifestyle changes. Stress, certain foods especially those with high amino acid, lack of sleep, strong odors and flashing lights are all things that have been known to trigger migraines.
Numerous research studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments have been effective treatments for headache pain, especially tension headaches or headaches that originate in the neck. Dr. Michaux, our Clermont chiropractor will perform spinal manipulations to alleviate your headache pain. This chiropractic technique has been proven the most effective for treating tension headaches. Typically your headache is treated though manipulation of the upper two cervical vertebrae, coupled with adjustments at the junction between the cervical and thoracic spine. Each person is different and you will be examined before treatment to determine the best way to eliminate your headache pain.
