Tip #9

Eat Frequently

Do you know what Sumo wrestlers do to gain weight?  They typically eat only twice a day, but they eat very large portions of high glycemic foods (like potatoes).  And then they go to sleep after eating.  That’s the Sumo wrestler diet.  Many people unknowingly have been on a diet similar to the Sumo wrestler diet by skipping meals and eating a large meal of high glycemic foods too late at night.  No wonder they have such a hard time losing weight!

Many successful weight loss programs consist of three small meals and two to three healthy snacks every day.  When I say snack, I’m not talking about candy bars or cookies.  Why so many?  Because this is the best way to burn excess calories that are stored as fat, prevent overeating, keep your blood sugar and insulin levels stable, as well as keeping you energized and satisfied.  Eating or not eating affects hormone levels specifically, insulin and glucagon.  When you skip meals your body releases a hormone (glucagon) that can cause muscle loss.  You may want to lose weight, but you want it to be fat loss, not muscle loss.  Make it a point not to skip meals and to have a light snack between meals.
