Lifting

Common Lifting Injuries

Lifting extremely heavy objects and repetitively lifting objects of all sizes and weights can lead to injuries in the back, neck and extremities.

  • Herniated or Slipped Discs
  • Repetitive Motion Injuries
  • Neck Injuries
  • Shoulder and Knee Injuries
  • Sprains and Strains

Symptoms of a Lifting Injury

When it comes to lifting injuries, you may experience symptoms right away or after some time has passed. Your symptoms may also come and go, according to your activity levels. Common signs that you have a lifting injury include pain and swelling at the location of the injury, inflammation, muscle spasms and loss of range of motion. If you have a slipped or herniated disc that is pressing on the sciatic nerve, you may also experience pain in your legs. If your injury is located in your neck, you may experience neck pain and stiffness and shoulder and/or upper back discomfort.

Preventing Lifting Injuries

If you do a lot of lifting on a daily basis, it's important to take certain precautions. You should always lift with your legs instead of bending at the hips, and you should never twist or turn your back while carrying a heavy object. If the object weighs more than you can safely lift or is bulky, you should use a dolly, pallet jack or other lifting aide to help you move the object. If a lifting aid is not available, have another person assist you with lifting and moving the object. Additionally, you should always strive to keep your body well-conditioned by eating healthy and exercising at least 30 minutes a day.
