Spinal Decompression FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Spinal Decompression at Michaux Family Chiropractic

If you're suffering from back pain, neck pain, or neurological discomforts in your extremities, you may have heard someone mention spinal decompression as a possible solution. But what is this form of therapy all about? Here are the answers to frequently asked questions on the topic at Michaux Family Chiropractic.

How do parts of the spine become compressed?

Compression can affect multiple structures in your spine. In some cases, an acute accident may dislocate spinal components and herniate discs, which may then push their way into neighboring nerve tissue. More commonly, bulging discs and other degenerative changes gradually put increasing pressure on nerves and nerve roots.

What are effects of spinal nerve impingement?

When a spinal nerve root or other spinal tissue becomes pinched, it cannot relay nerve signals correctly. This may mean that every smaller nerve branching off from that larger nerve section experiences dysfunction. A pinched cervical nerve may cause weakness, numbness, pain and other problems in an upper extremity, while a pinched sciatica nerve (toward the base of the spine) may cause sciatica symptoms in your leg or lower back.

How do bulging discs contribute to chronic joint pain?

In addition to nerve impingement, bulging discs can irritate spinal joints as they lose height (due to water loss inside the discs). The reduced space strains and stresses the joints, possibly to the point of causing spinal arthritis.

Is surgery required to correct spinal compression issues?

At one point, surgery to remove disc tissue and/or fuse vertebrae was the primary method for correcting spinal compression, extreme as it may be. But today, conservative techniques are preferred for most cases. We can provide non-surgical spinal decompression therapy that can provide similar relief without reducing your spinal mobility.

How does non-surgical spinal decompression work?

Non-surgical spinal decompression uses a mechanical table with harnesses to impart a specific kind of force called flexion distraction. Our chiropractor applies small degrees of this force to increase the space between vertebrae. The resulting reverse pressure draws bulging or herniated discs away from the pinched nerves -- while also pulling water into bulging discs that need more height.

Is this technique painful or dangerous?

Spinal decompression therapy is completely safe as administered by our chiropractor, Dr. Michaux. It's also completely painless. This combination of qualities makes it an excellent alternative to medication for long-term pain management.
