In the Community: Helping Kids Through Chiropractic Care

We were delighted to take part in a free event for Clermont's kids on June 22nd at the First United Methodist Church, partnered by New Beginnings. We gave free scoliosis screenings and posture evaluations to homeless individuals and volunteers who support them allowing them opportunities for chiropractic care they might not be able to afford. But we want to reinforce the point that specifically children -- including yours -- need to have their posture and spinal alignment checked throughout their development. Think of it as a way to prevent serious health and spinal problems, not just as an option.

Why is it so necessary to have these screenings done from a young age? Many spinal mis-alignments begin to develop during the growing years and they can wreak havoc not only on the body and posture, but also on physical and health functions. The common childhood spinal disease is scoliosis. This curvature of the spinal column typically begins between the ages of 3 and 15. Fortunately, our chiropractor can intervene with gentle treatment and home exercises as well as other non-surgical techniques to reduce and prevent the curvature's progression.

Kids also suffer spinal stress from lugging heavy backpacks around all day, especially if they spend a lot of time texting, watching TV or playing video games instead of getting regular exercise. Obesity, a major problem among kids today, adds more strain to the spine, muscles and joints. Nerve dysfunction caused by spinal misalignments can even contribute to ADHD, ear infections, pains and other common childhood complaints. For all these reasons, we urge parents and organizations to help children get spinal screenings yearly.
