Is Your Low Back Pain Due to a Herniated Disc?

low back due to herniated disc in Clermont.jpgLow back pain may be caused by a variety of injuries or degenerative processes like arthritis They also may be from disc problems like a herniation, bulge or slipped disc. Some people have back pain, but others may experience sciatica, which is pressure on the nerve that goes down the leg.

In between the vertebra in your spine are cartilaginous discs which when healthy are soft in the center and covered by a tough outer layer. When the jelly-like substance in the center of a disc squeezes out through a crack or tear in the outer layers, this is referred to as bulging, ruptured or herniated. When we damage our spine through sports, accidents, poor posture or otherwise, our spinal discs dehydrate and become more susceptible to tears which, in turn, make them easier to herniate. As they wear down over time, an individual is more likely to experience symptoms like back pain, numbness, tingling, weakness or sciatica.  Some patients just degenerate and actually have no symptoms or mask the symptoms with medication till the pain subsides, unfortunately things will eventually get bad. For most patients, chiropractic treatment or spinal decompression will be enough to resolve the symptoms without having to resort to surgery, but the key is to address it as soon as possible.
